these are the ranks the dons have to give
Outsider- these are the new recruits, after someone joins a family, they are an outsider. they hold almost no power and aren't officially in the family yet
Associate- these guys handle all the dirty work and are very low ranking. they work under capos, but can also be used by soldiers as well
Soldier- these are the guys who have officially pledged their loyalty. they are most of the time called "made men" because they are connected to the family forever. they work as hit men who do the tough jobs for capos. only make people soldiers if you truly believe they deserve it or have earned it
Capo- Italian for Captain I believe, but these are the big guys. they command a crew of soldiers and associates. they are very high ranking and you should not make too many of them. choose carefully when you're about to promote someone to capo, because capos are very high authority figures and have a lot of responsibility. only make capos if they completely deserve it and if they're ready for it
Underboss- these are the big dawgs kind of. they are generally the Don's kids most of the time, but sometimes are really close and loyal friends to the Don. they serve as the right hand men of the Don and normally are next in line to be the new dons hence the name, or if the current don can't do his job, one of his underbosses will become "acting Don." you should rarely make underbosses, as you don't need that many. but the ones you do make, be sure they are your good friends and extremely loyal to you
Consigliere- this is an alternate rank to underboss. consiglieres serve as the Don's advisor and normally do most of the thinking for the him. they can give orders to anyone in the family and generally have the same powers as underbosses, but aren't in line to be Don. you only need one consigliere, but having a few more can't hurt, but be sure your consigliere is smart, as they need to be able to negotiate well with other families
